I mostly see kids movies these days. That, combined with low expectations from the onslaught of jokes about its name, may have colored my impression but I thought it was lovely. Not perfect, but a great story nonetheless. Not only is Cameron Crowe a fantastic screenwriter with his idol Billy Wilder’s knack for language but, like I said, he traffics in earnestness like very few of his peers. That may seem like no big deal but the Shrekification of family fare has left very little room for sincerity — it’s essentially Crowe and Pixar, and since Crowe’s movies are for adults, he’s an odd man out. But, Vanilla Sky notwithstanding, if he keeps being allowed to make movies, I’ll keep seeing them.
