[California Gurls comes on the radio]
Ryan: Please don’t make me listen to Katy Homophobe.
Me: It is kind of catchy, though.
Ryan: We could swing by a Tea Party rally and then go home to watch reality TV where some sixteen year old is crying because she’s pregnant or a toddler is crying…
In my house, we call this “Tuesday.”

An Observation
Two days ago, a man with an amazing life story and an exceedingly generous and philanthropic spirit has the misfortune of dying on a Segway. The jokes fly.
Today, a comedian who made a point of telling people not to take him too seriously died of an apparently accidental overdose. In place of jokes, we get introspection.
I don’t wish to tell anybody how to grieve or insinuate that one life is...
Malaise vs. Lethargy
Barack Obama is mad as hell and he’s not gonna take it anymore:
“People need to shake off this lethargy. People need to buck up,” Obama told Rolling Stone in an interview to be published Friday. The president told Democrats that making change happen is hard and “if people now want to take their ball and go home, that tells me folks weren’t serious in the first...
Americans are Really Religious But Don't Know... →
From the dirty Yankee paper of record:
Researchers from the independent Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life phoned more than 3,400 Americans and asked them 32 questions about the Bible, Christianity and other world religions, famous religious figures and the constitutional principles governing religion in public life….Those who scored the highest were atheists and agnostics, as well as...
Dear Sportswriters and Reporters: Stop Calling...
Being named a starting quarterback after spending 18 months in prison for killing dogs is not redemption. Winning football games is not redemption — it’s just winning football games.
What would be redeeming is if Vick went beyond what the judge ordered or what his handlers recommended in atoning for his crimes. What would be redeeming is if he devoted himself to making sure others...
Sunday Morning Media
Some newsy/featury type stuff I’m crushing on this morning:
“Lennon at 70!” Vanity Fair (thanks, Ryan)
“Fear & Loathing in the Form of a Question,” Jelisa Castrodale (AKA GordonShumway)
“Act 2: Is That a Tape Recorder in Your Pocket or Are You Just Unhappy to See Me?” This American Life Ep 414: The Right to Remain Silent

Gamecenter Me?
I’m signed up for Gamecenter but as yet haven’t used it. What should I be playing? And whom?
I’m essdogg at gmail.
What Stephen Colbert did to the legislative system today is what he did to Bush and the press at the National Press Club in 2006, which is what Jon Stewart did to “Crossfire” in 2004. He made everyone look like fools playing a stupid game. It’s natural that “the press” would be offended — he destroyed any semblance of honor in their profession (I’m speaking of political reporters) by working...
For Sale: Two (2) Tickets to Matador at 21 in Las...
***PLEASE REBLOG***
This is one of those “my eyes were bigger than my stomach” situations. When tickets went on sale for Matador at 21 in Las Vegas at the Pearl, I was one of the lucky few who made it through and got a pair. I was supposed to be in San Fran the week after and then back to Las Vegas the week after that, with a six-months pregnant wife and 3-year-old at home. I told...

[… blah blah blah …] Professor: I guess you’ll have to take them on Faith, son. Student: That is it, sir.. exactly! The link between man and God is Faith. That is all that keeps things alive and moving! That student was Albert Einstein. gosh, this one has done the rounds in tumblr…..
Here’s why I believe this story is false:
The Einsteins were non-observant Jews.

I’m not a complete idiot about bears. I know how dangerous they are and that you never, ever feed them unless you’re just a complete stupid idiot. I wasn’t about to put hamburgers in my pockets and head out so we could make sweet love. Although in retrospect I probably could have gotten some of my fellow travelers to put up at least $250 for a stunt like that. There’s...
So this happened while I was in the mountains. As you can tell from my commentary, I know a LOT about bear behavior, especially their climbing abilities.

For those into this kind of thing, I started a weight-loss program called the Healthy Charleston Challenge this week. I plan to lose 40-45 pounds. Or quit in shame. Whichever comes first. Anyway, you can follow the fun at the link above.
Dear Mike Krzyzewski: Thanks for Making it so Easy... →
Coach K questions a fellow coach’s patriotism. So apparently he’s a Teabagger.
“He’s Russian,” Krzyzewski told reporters. “He coaches the Russian team. So he probably has that viewpoint. His eyes are clearer now because there are no tears in them.”
“I’m not Russian,” Blatt countered to Yahoo! Sports. “I’m an American-Israeli. But I’m proud that I can view things...
