Also, the footnote thing...
I think that may be the biggest turnoff of Infinite Jest for me. It’s not clever — it’s a lazy conceit of academia. Nicholson Baker’s The Mezzanine was only like 100 pages and its footnotes drove me fucking insane. There was no story there, just inside jokes that weren’t jokes at all.
